Art Club

Description: Art Club is a student-led group that functions primarily with the goal to provide an opportunity for students to come together in a community outside of the classroom setting to engage in conversation on different ideas happening in art.

Battle of the Books
Sponsor(s): Ms. Carter
Description: Middle School Battle of the Books (MBOB) is a program that encourages reading. MBOB is essentially a book club that competes. Each team consists of no more than 12 middle school students who battle against other middle schools within the district. During the competition, students are asked questions based on the plot, characters, and setting of each of the 20 books.
Meeting Time & Location: Thursdays 4:00pm - 6:00pm in the Media Center
Member Qualifications: Any middle school student that is in good academic standing and committed to fulfilling the following student responsibilities:

Boys2Men

Description: The mission of the Boys to Men Mentoring Group at East Hoke Middle School is to engage males with academic enrichment, leadership development and activities, higher-order thinking conversation, male etiquette, and community service. Boyz to Men will typically meet every Thursday unless otherwise noted and stated via email and morning announcements. Throughout the year Boys to Men will be involved in multiple scholastic, service and leisure opportunities. During our weekly meetings, the boys will discuss different topics of real life in real-world conversations. Boys to Men will support the NCDPI initiative “Portrait of a Graduate” by teaching boys, the following: Adaptability, Collaboration, Communication, Critical Thinking, Empathy, Learner’s Mindset, and Personal Responsibility through a series of hands-on mentorship during the school day and never ending, even when the student is home.

The Princess In Me

Description: What is The Princess In Me?
The Princess In Me is a mentoring program for young ladies who face challenges in life and who may not know how to authentically express themselves. This program will equip you with skills to cope with everyday life. We will also give support in areas of academics for those who may struggle in that area. I would love to have peer tutoring sessions and question-and-answer sessions that will address any issues you may have. During this time the you will have some life-changing experiences that will help shape you into the women of our future. We will come together at least twice a month and I will speak with you every week. However, if there is a need you may have before we meet as long as it does not interfere with your academic time I will take a moment to help you out. I want the you to understand how important self-worth, self-care, and self-confidence is to your personal growth. When the you exit this program you will be conditioned to conquer anything that comes your way with confidence and self pride. The Princess in Me will exude confidence in all areas of your life.

ESL Tutoring and English Club in Spanish
Advisor(s): Ms. Adrasse and Mrs. Laverde
Description: ESL Tutoring will focus on ACCESS test prep and English Language development. Students will receive instruction that targets their areas of need. Students will develop the skills necessary for success on the ACCESS test. Also, in the English Club in Spanish, they will have the opportunity to practice speaking skills with dual language students for their social and instructional purposes.
Meeting Time & Location: Ms. Adrasse’s group meets from 3:30-4:15 pm. Mrs. Laverde’s group meets from 3:45 to 4:45 pm. In room 122.

Science Olympiad
Advisor(s): Ms. Akers and Ms. Hall
Description: Team competition in which students choose from engineering and science topics to perform different tasks. These can range in the following:
- solving puzzles,
- using microscopes,
- building model bridges, moving vehicles or rubber band helicopters,
- solving a mock crime,
- measuring using scientific equipment,
- identifying different plants, bugs, weather, rocks,
- taking tests on subjects like weather, space, chemistry
- There are 20 different events to choose from for the competition.
Meeting Time & Location: M-Th 3:45-5:30 (certain events will be scheduled to stay on certain days, but expect to come each day).
Member Qualifications: 6-8, passing all academic class, sign a behavior contract, 1 recommendation from teacher.
