Battle of the Books

Battle of the Books

What is Battle of the Books (BOB)?

The purpose of the East Hoke Middle School Battle of the Books program is to encourage reading in middle school students. Students who participate are exposed to quality literature representing a variety of styles and viewpoints by prominent authors. MBOB is essentially a book club that competes. Each team consists of up to 12 middle schoolers. Students on the East Hoke team will compete on teams within the school and with other middle schools in Hoke County, and possibly at the regional level. Battle of the Books is conducted in a “game show” format that creates interest and excitement in reading. During the competition, students are asked questions based on the plot, characters, and setting of each of the 20 books. Through the fun and excitement of the competition, students improve reading skills, sharpen comprehension, grow in their choices of reading materials, and obtain a broader knowledge base. It helps students build self-confidence and improves communication skills with others in a fun setting.

Meeting Time & Location: Thursdays 4:00pm - 5:00pm in the Media Center

Member Qualifications: Any middle school student who is in good academic standing and committed to fulfilling the following student responsibilities:

  • Read ALL books and prepare for competition.

  • Practice teamwork and good sportsmanship.

  • Attend practice sessions
